What is breast augmentation?

The procedure is known as augmentation mammoplasty in the medical field. It is a reconstructive procedure that enlarges the breast by inserting implants. The implants are inserted under the chest muscles of the patient.

There are several reasons why breast augmentation is done. These are:

  • Increase the size of smaller breasts
  • Restore the mass of the breast after weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • Reconstruct breasts after injury or mastectomy
  • Even asymmetric breasts

In Australia, two types of breast implants are used. These are:

Saline implants — This implant uses silicone filled with sterile salt water. The advantage of an implant is that the body will absorb and naturally expel the saline if it leaks.

Silicone implants — This implant uses silicone filled with an elastic gel. The gel feels like a natural breast. Also, if there is leakage, the silicone will not collapse. The gel may stay in the implant shell, or it may leak into the scar capsule.
