As the name portrays in itself, eating disorders are linked to our diet. Sometimes it is the complicated health problems that need nutritionists to be involved. 

Research says that in the U.S, about 10 million men have or had undergone this type of disorder in their lives. And the number is not less than in women. It surpasses 10 million, and an approximate 20 million women suffer or are suffering from eating disorders.

Let’s discuss the types of disorders and how it affects the youth. Before we dive into the classes, let me briefly explain the causes of these disorders and discuss the safety measures we need to take.

Nowadays, a large number of people are suffering from psychological problems. According to the stats, an average of 7.4 percent of grown-ups suffers from mental health issues. Any mental illness that stimulates poor eating habits is assumed to be an eating disorder. 

Eating disorders can damage the digestive system, teeth, and heart, etc. If left untreated, eating disorders can lead to a fatal illness and, in severe cases, can be a reason for the casualty. 

The most common symptoms include drastic weight loss and restricting eating certain foods. 

It is most commonly found in childhood and women at a young age. However, it can hit at any age regardless of gender.

What are the causes of eating disorders:

Various factors cause eating disorders. Some most common include:

  • Genetics
  • Personality traits
  • Pressure of society

Some researches show that an eating disorder is likely to occur in twins. It is observed that certain type of genes is the cause of eating disorders. If changes in brain chemicals take place, it can also lead to developing an eating disorder. 

Another factor that contributes to the development of an eating disorder is personality traits. Having low self-esteem, impulsive behavior, or perfectionism is the behavior that leads to an eating disorder.

Society also puts pressure on promoting thin as an ideal. Furthermore, some cultures also promote thinness, which is again anxiety on teens resultantly, they end up eating less and developing an eating disorder. 

Types of disorders:

Anorexia nervosa:

It is one of the most common disorders. It is because people are often too tensed about being obese. When this anxiety exceeds, the situation is referred to as Anorexia nervosa.

This disorder can make the victim lose weight excessively because they feel good when they are slimmer and vice versa.

The person with this disorder consumes low-calorie foods. More chances of developing this disorder are in young women and men. 

Symptoms of Anorexia nervosa:

A person suffering from this disorder tries to keep their weight too low in various ways. i.e., exercising excessively and intaking fewer calories. Symptoms of anorexia nervosa consist of constipation, sleeplessness, less pressure of blood, tiredness and dry skin, etc.

Bulimia nervosa:

It is another pervasive disorder. It is also developed at a very young age and common in young women more than in men. 

The person suffering from this syndrome eats excessive portions of food in a certain period. And continues to eat until he can’t take any more food. 

Afterward, they try to cleanse(purge) to balance. So that the excess calories can be burned out. Purging behaviors are usually unnatural, like forced vomiting or excessive exercising and using diuretics, etc.

Symptoms of Bulimia nervosa:

Bulimia nervosa include excessive eating within the duration, purging behavior repetitively, and developing a fear of attaining weight. 

This eating disorder can affect salivary glands, teeth, and severe cases can cause a heart attack.

Binge eating disorder:

  This is the most common eating disorder. In this type of disorder, a person intakes an extraordinary amount of food secretly. It develops in early adultness but can be observed at later ages. 

A person with a binge eating disorder does not use purging behaviors. 

Symptoms of binge eating disorder:

Overeating and feeling guilty for it, and having no control while excessive eating is binge eating symptoms. 

This disorder leads to obesity and weight gain

Rumination disorder:

    This is a condition in which the patient vomits whatever he had swallowed. In this disorder, a person needs to regorge after almost every meal.

This condition is mostly found in infants and children. It disappears on its own. In some cases, adults also face it; they might need a doctor to recover.

It is recommended for adults that they do not eat in public places, which can be a cause of weight loss.

Pica eating disorder:

      This is a disorder in which harmful objects are being eaten. These objects have zero nutritional value. A person suffering from pica disorder has cravings for items like metal pieces or ice etc.

It can lead to severe issues like lead poisoning. It’s most commonly observed in kids and pregnant ladies.

Some people with developmental disabilities can also have pica eating disorder.      

How it can affect the career or business:

A person suffering from eating disorders can affect physical health, but it’s not the only problem; the psychological issues might be more ambiguous. Eating disorders apparently may seem not very harmful, but it impacts all the factors of life from financial to emotional, spiritual to physical and many more.

Typically, a person with an eating disorder suffers silently. An eating disorder can severely impact anyone at any age.
