The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) test is usually the first step toward becoming a certified professional engineer. These FE exam Classes are for recent graduates and students nearing completion of an EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering degree program. The FE exam is computer-based offered year-round at Pearson VUE test centers that NCEES has approved.
There are 110 questions on the FE exam. The exam is of 6 hours long and comprises the following:
- Agreement on non-disclosure (2 minutes)
- Instructions (8 minutes)
- Examine (5 hours and 20 minutes)
- Taking a scheduled break (25 minutes)

Look at the most recent FE test pass rates and your capabilities. The exam price is $175 and must be paid directly to NCEES. To qualify for a seat on an NCEES exam, some licensing boards may ask you to submit a separate application and pay an application fee as part of the approval process. Your licensing board may impose additional restrictions.
Exam preparation and reference materials of Fe exam
The reference material that students should use during the exam is the NCEES FE Reference Handbook. During the exam, students will be given an electronic reference manual. You can either buy a hard copy or download a free electronic copy to access it before your exam.
To get your free copy of the FE Reference Handbook, go to MyNCEES and register or log in. Practice tests are available through NCEES. These practice exams include questions from previous exams and are explicitly created for study materials to provide you with additional practice.

The results of the exam are usually available 7–10 days after you take it. NCEES will send you an email with details on how to get your results through your MyNCEES account. The results contain advice from your licensing board on how you should continue based on your performance.

The FE exam, formerly known as the Engineering Intern (EI) exam in some jurisdictions, is the critical exam required to become certified as Professional Engineers in the United States. Anyone having a degree in engineering or a related profession or presently studying in the last year of an accredited engineering degree program is eligible to take the FE exam. Some state boards allow students to take it before their final year, and many states allow persons who have never attended a recognized program to take it.
Exam preparation tricks for the Fe exam?
Writing instruments and scratch paper are not allowed to be brought to the exam location. For working issues, a pen and sheet set over grid paper will be given as scratch paper. No calculators are allowed unless NCEES has approved them; these models have no programming or communication features to avoid cheating. Only a guidebook issued to examinees on the testing program may be used as a source of information. The reference manual can be downloaded or purchased in hard copy from the NCEES website for study purposes. On the other hand, Examinees are not permitted to bring their documents to the testing location; they must use the ones provided.
The FE exam classes are required exams for engineers to become licensed professional engineers (PE) in the United States. Before taking the PE exam, engineering college seniors or working engineers must pass the exam and gain four years of engineering job experience. The examinee becomes a licensed professional engineer after passing the PE test (PE). A licensed professional engineer has the legal authority to stamp and seal engineering documents for distribution to the general public. Passing the exam Classes qualifies you for inclusion in the TBPE’s EIT database, which may be searched by any organization looking for an entry-level engineer.
