How to make a recording studio in your home

Recording can become a major roadblock for you if you are a beginner music producer. Professional studios are quite expensive to rent, and your room might not be ready for recording yet. But the good news nowadays, anyone can build a small home studio with the right knowledge and tools. Our audio mix studio knows a lot about optimizing your space to get perfect takes. So in this article, we will share some tips with you.

First of all, you should choose a room you want to transform into your recording space. You might be tempted to set up your laptop and monitors on your kitchen table and just go for it. However, your expensive equipment won’t remedy the situation if you record in a space that is not properly equipped for this. If you want your recordings to be as clean as possible, you have to build a place suited for recording sounds. Ideally, you should choose a place with no windows, like a closet or basement. If you don’t have access to the room without windows choose the one with small windows, which preferably don’t face a road. Preferably your studio should have solid doors and thick walls. But don’t stress if none of the rooms in your house fit the description, it is possible to fix some of the flaws with additional materials later.

Once you’ve chosen the place you want to use, carry out a simple test and get some of your gear there to see whether it will fit in it. If you find out that the room is smaller than you imagined it to be, think about how you can use walls to store your equipment. In that case, build your studio vertically not horizontally. Ideally, you should soundproof it. We don’t realize how many noises surround us until we plug in the mic and hear it in the headphones. So the place will almost certainly need some soundproofing. Soundproofing will help you make it quieter and keep all the sounds inside, so you don’t disturb your neighbors and family members. The amount of work you will have to do depends on the initial quality of the chosen place. Good soundproofing requires money, time, and skills. But don’t feel pressured to make it perfect from the start. You can always begin with what you have and upgrade as you go.

Another simple trick that can help you soundproof your place a little bit is putting a little rug or carpet on the floor. It will absorb some of the high and mid frequencies. Usually, rooms in a regular home have poor acoustics. There is no way you can fix your room, but there is a way to calibrate the sound coming out of your speakers. SoundID Reference software by sonaworks, calibrates the audio and makes it sound as if you were in a professional studio. So, if you don’t have the money to reconstruct your apartment, you may like this option better. Now all you have to do is bring in your gear. The last thing you want to consider is dividing your place into two separate areas. One for recording and the other for mixing if you record others. If you work alone, then you may want to keep everything in one place to make it more convenient. These are some of the things you should consider when you are building your home studio. We hope you liked it and found something useful.
