In case of an emergency such as a tsunami, tornado, fire outbreak, or any other unforeseen event, having enough clean water for drinking and hygiene is essential to ensure all your family’s needs are met. Ideally, it’s recommended that you store one gallon of water each day per person, with half to be used for hygiene and the other half for drinking. When storing water for long-term use, you need to make sure it doesn’t get contaminated, or else it won’t be of any help when an emergency strikes.

Knowing this, you must have a clear idea of how to store your emergency water properly. But because this isn’t a straightforward task, it’s easy to find it quite overwhelming. If you’re stuck knowing what needs to be done, here are some valuable tips to consider when storing water for long-term use in your home.

Get A Suitable Container

Water stored for prolonged periods for emergency use is prone to the growth of bacteria as time passes when stored in old containers. Therefore, you shouldn’t make such a mistake and should instead ensure to invest in a quality container made from food-grade plastic that’s BPA-free and UV-resistant. By storing water in such quality containers, you don’t have to worry about transferring toxic chemicals into the water, thereby affecting your health or that of your loved ones.

Water storage containers come in different sizes, and you should first go through the range here to know which one best suits your needs. This will ensure you at all times that you’ll ready for whatever situation that comes your way. If you’re uncertain whether the container is food-grade, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the manufacturer to get confirmation from them. When food-grade containers aren’t available, you can also go with a container that is:

  • Built from unbreakable and robust materials
  • With a top which can be closed firmly
  • With a narrow opening through which you can pour out the water.

You should never use containers that have been used to store solid or liquid toxic chemicals such as pesticides or bleach in the past. This is vital to avoid exposing yourself to contaminants that might adversely affect your health. In addition, avoid water containers such as empty milk jugs as these are made from biodegradable plastic, which slowly deteriorates as time passes. Such containers also have some trace amounts of milk that contaminate water, making it unsuitable for consumption.

Always Clean Water Storage Containers Before Using Them

It would be best if you always cleaned the storage containers before adding water into them. This is usually done by adding 5ml of household chlorine bleach to a liter of water. It’s recommended not to use bleach that contains thickeners, additives, or scents. Alternatively, you can consider washing the water storage container with hot tap water and detergent, after which you should rinse it thoroughly.

Ensure to shake the container properly when cleaning it to ensure the bleaching agent comes into contact with every area inside the container. Consequently, clean the container thoroughly and close it firmly with a lid to ensure any dirt doesn’t enter the now clean and sanitized container. Make sure that not only the container is clean but also the water. You have to make sure that your water filter is well-maintained so that the water you will store in the container is also free from impurities.

Find A Suitable Storage Location

Where you store your water is another vital factor to consider when storing water for long-term use. The best storage area for your emergency water should be dark, cool, and with no animal or human activity. Choosing a storage location with minimal movement is preferred as this reduces a container’s movement, and this might introduce bacteria or loosen the container lids. It’s also important for the storage container to be away from direct heat or sunlight because this increases the chances of the water changing in chemistry as well as biological growth.

Determine How Much Water To Store

When storing water for emergency use, the recommended quantity is one gallon of water per person for one day that can last for at least three days. However, while storing emergency water to be used for at least three days is recommended, having at least one- or two-week’s water supply stored would be much better.

This means you need a water tank that can store 56 gallons of water for a family of four instead of 12 gallons of water which you would have needed to store for 3 days.

Knowing how to store your water supply correctly is essential as the last thing you’d want is the lack of water during an emergency. But after reading over this post, you shouldn’t have such an issue as it’s highlighted helpful tips on how to store your water for home use. Therefore, even when disaster strikes, you won’t be left high and dry due to no water reserve. Hope you love reading about “Long Term Water Storage At Home”
