Safety Tips for New Mothers – Special Parenting Guide for Mothers

Keeping your baby safe is no joke, and you shouldn’t take it lightly. Read Safety Tips for New Mothers guide that can really help.

Motherhood brings with it a sense of fulfillment and joy. That said, becoming a mom means ensuring the safety of your newborn, which is why it’s normal for mothers to feel unprepared—especially first-time moms.

Keeping your baby safe is no joke, and you shouldn’t take it lightly. It would be best if you were adequately prepared to safeguard your bundle of joy against various potential dangers. Unfortunately, there are a variety of safety concerns for newborns. Thankfully, though, we’ve come up with a list of safety tips to make your job a lot easier.

1. Learn how to perform CPR

Learn how to perform CPR

As a new mother, you must know how and when to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Hopefully, you won’t need to do this on your tiny infant, but there’s every possibility that it can happen. Adults typically require CPR when they suffer a heart attack. Conversely, toddlers require resuscitation when they suffer cardiac arrest resulting from suffocation, choking, near-drowning, smoke inhalation, severe asthma, and more.

CPR generally involves chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. When you suspect your bundle of joy is unresponsive, unconscious, or isn’t breathing normally, don’t hesitate to perform CPR. Doing so will help your child start breathing again and restore blood flow to the heart, brain, and other vital organs.

If you don’t already know how to perform an infant CPR, you can enrol for a physical or an online CPR course. Either way, make sure a CPR-certified instructor teaches you. In addition to a CPR certification, also try to receive a first aid certification. If you are based in the UK, you can train and get certified in London CPR.

2. Maintain healthy hygiene

Toddlers are more susceptible to infections as their immune system isn’t yet fully developed. Unhygienic conditions can, therefore, leave toddlers vulnerable to certain illnesses. Whether your baby is sleeping, playing, or eating, you must maintain cleanliness.

For one, ensure your baby’s feeding bottles are adequately cleaned and sanitized. In addition, you need to keep yourself clean, too.

Certainly, good hygiene can also prevent the spread of certain infectious diseases that can cause harm to your child. Be sure to shower regularly and wear clean clothes before feeding time. More so, when feeding, try to wear a white blouse or t-shirt. That way, it’ll be easier to know when it requires washing.

3. Get a life jacket for your baby

Get a life jacket for your baby

If you’re looking to spend some time with your baby in a swimming pool or by the beach, ensure you purchase a life jacket for your little one. An infant life jacket ensures your baby is safe and secure while you’re having fun.

When looking for the best life jackets, opt for one approves by the U.S. Coast Guard. Take, for example, a type II PFD (personal flotation device) designed to keep babies floating on calm waters. Additionally, be sure to check the fitting of the life jacket ahead of time. The thing is, some life jackets don’t work for tiny infants under 18 months.

This is why, before buying an infant life jacket, you need to check to see if it has a leg strap. This safety feature is designed to pass through the baby’s legs to prevent it from slipping out of the life jacket. In addition, it should have head support or neck support to help keep your child’s head out of the water.

4. Babyproof your home

Most homes are built to be adult-friendly, which makes them unsafe for toddlers. Studies show that children between the ages of one and four often get injured within their homes. That’s why you need to make some modifications when you have a new baby. While the best time to baby-proof your home is before your child arrives, it’s better late than never. Baby-proofing makes your home more baby-friendly and mitigates certain risk factors. There are several measures you can put in place to guarantee the protection of your precious one.

For one, install child safety gates to prevent your little one from going down the stairs or entering rooms that pose safety risks. Putting things like stuffed animals or toys, bumpers, pillows, and beddings into the crib increases the risk of suffocation. There’s no gainsaying that toddlers can be squirmy. That said, opt for a changing table with a built-in safety strap.

5. Never leave the baby unattended

Even though you have babyproofed your home, it’s still not advisable to leave babies by themselves. The tiniest bit of carelessness can prove to be dangerous. Furthermore, this can be exhausting, considering that you have to take a bath, cook dinner, or take a nap. You can request for a close friend or family member to help watch over your little one.

Even when your tiny infant is taking a nap, you shouldn’t leave the baby unattended, even for a minute. Thanks to technology, you can also install a baby monitor with good video and sound quality in the nursery. It’s also worth noting that leaving your baby alone in a car is very dangerous. Of all the risks, heatstroke appears to be the biggest of all. Hope you love reading about “Safety Tips for New Mothers”
