Do’s And Don’ts Of Water Filter Maintenance

It’s part of your responsibility as a homeowner to ensure the upkeep and maintenance of all the systems. Read about “Water Filter Maintenance”

If you’ve invested in a water filter system at home to keep everyone in your household safe, then good for you. Whether you’ve got a new baby or sick family members, or you live in a place where the water isn’t potable if unfiltered, a home water filter system is one of the best solutions you can spend money on.

Water Filter Maintenance

However, once you have a water filter, it’s not enough to say that you have the system in place and then not bother to take care of it. It’s part of your responsibility as a homeowner to ensure the upkeep and maintenance of all the systems and equipment on your property—the water filter included. With that said, here’s a list of several do’s and don’ts when it comes to keeping your water filter in excellent condition:

1. Do Determine Your Water Filter’s Limitations

For you to know whether your water filter is still functioning as well as it should be, you should find out what its limitations are. After all, there’s no one perfect filter that can remove all of the impurities in water.

Depending on the water filter you have, some minerals may still end up going through. But as long as you don’t notice any changes to the quality of your filtered water, be it in how it tastes or smells, you can rest assured that the filter’s doing its job.

If you’re looking for good filters to replace your old one, take the time to get acquainted with your new water filter. In doing so, you’ll know how to maximize the benefits it provides and extend its longevity.

2. Do Establish A Good Cleaning Routine

It’s important to clean your water filter system regularly so you can prevent the buildup of minerals, dirt, and contaminants in it. When you do so, however, it’s important to avoid using any harsh cleaning products or chemicals that may enter the water filter, interfere with the filtering process, and be ingested by your family.

While you don’t have to do a deep clean every week, it’s advisable to thoroughly clean the essential parts of the filter at least once a year. You can do this as you clean the rest of your home and other equipment such as your water heater. If you have natural cleaning solutions for this purpose, then all the better.

3. Do Not Hesitate To Install A Water Softener

A water purifying system will work best with a softener because the latter can remove water-hardening substances like magnesium and calcium present in unfiltered water. With a softener, the life span and durability of your water filter may improve. The softener can also address whatever corrosion occurs in the water plumbing system of your home.

When it comes to the installation of a water softener, however, be sure to leave this job to the professionals. This is a rather complicated plumbing task that only experts should be handling. You might only damage your water filter and entire plumbing system if you attempt to do this on your own.

4. Do Not Delay Changing Your Water Filter Cartridge

Your water filter can only function well if its parts are properly maintained. One of the parts that have to be kept in excellent condition is the water filter cartridge. You’re better off drinking unfiltered water straight from the tap than drinking one from a filter with a worn-out cartridge.

Generally, the recommended frequency for changing your water filter cartridge is at least once every six months and never beyond a year. That period will also depend on the filtration stage the filter is used in, namely the following:

  • The Pre-Filtering Stage: This is when external debris like sand is separated from the water, which ultimately prevents the reverse osmosis membrane from getting damaged. The filter for this should be changed once every three to six months.
  • The Second Phase: The carbon filter that removes chlorine and bad odor during this stage needs to be changed once every six to nine months.
  • The Third Phase: In the reverse osmosis stage, residual sediments are removed and drained. The membrane can be replaced in two to three years.

Here are two signs you need to have your water filter cartridge changed right away:

  • The rate of water flow in your faucets is significantly slower.
  • The water coming from the water filter starts to have a foul taste.

Doing so will allow you and your family to reap the benefits it offers for years to come.
