What do You need to Know About Becoming an Architect?

Architects create technical drawings for the design and the restoration of buildings to give them a whole new lease of life. For creative individuals, this is a dream career that pays a high salary and offers plenty of exciting prospects. As you can expect, this role takes a great deal of accountability, as the design is more than just the visual aspect; it’s also the safety and structural qualities of the build. However, witnessing the finished result of a building you have designed or restored is extremely fulfilling.

If you are considering becoming an architect, there are a few key pointers you need to know about the industry. Check them out below:

You may be working long hours

The usual 9-5 office hours do not exist in an architect’s world. You can expect to work long days both in the office and on-site. The expectation of the client for the architect to achieve perfection could even see you working on projects until the early hours of the morning. However, those passionate about their career will see the entire experience as a thrilling challenge as opposed to a burden and will enjoy the task of editing the design until excellence is achieved.

You’ll need great social skills

While architecture mainly consists of independent working, you’ll need to be comfortable socializing with clients, engineers, interior designers, and builders, which isn’t easy if you’re an introvert. Throughout the entirety of the project, you’ll be expected to meet a variety of different people to ensure your vision is carried out to your exact specifications.

You’ll need a specialized qualification

You need to earn a specialized architect qualification to become an architect. Beforehand, you’ll need to apply for a license in the state you wish to work in before applying for degree courses in architecture. During the application process, you may need to show proof of your architecture portfolio so that the reviewer can gain an understanding of your talents and determine whether you should be accepted onto the course.

The industry is ever-growing

With the developments of technology over the past few decades, architecture has now become more fascinating than ever. Using software is much more common than traditional hand sketches; therefore, you’ll need to be a whizz at IT to become successful in the industry.

What’s more, architecture is split into many subdivisions to match different specialties, so it may be a good idea to carry out some research to determine which area best suits you.

You’ll come across problems that need solving

Regardless of the project you’re working on, you’re sure to come across complications along the way, and that’s why you’ll need to be a great problem solver. Structural and engineering issues are common in a variety of projects, which means you may need to go back to the drawing board and edit your design with imaginative approaches. Providing you don’t mind coming across obstacles and working around them, you’ll thoroughly enjoy life as an architect.

If you have always wanted to become an architect, hopefully, the above information has come in useful to help you evaluate whether this is the correct career path for you.
