Why Chimney Flashing Repair is Important

If you found a leak in your roof, what would your first reaction be? You’d probably assume that you lost some shingles or something of that nature. If you only consider the shingles, though, you’re leaving your roof vulnerable. Read about Chimney Flashing Repair below.

There’s another common cause of roofing issues that many people overlook: chimney flashing. Chimney flashing repair is a vital part of chimney maintenance and roof upkeep.

If you’ve never had a chimney before, or if you’ve never come across a flashing issue until now, you may not understand how important flashing repair is.

Keep reading to learn more about chimney flashing–what it does and what can happen if it’s damaged.

What Is Chimney Flashing?

To understand what chimney flashing is, you have to consider what a chimney is, structurally. It’s essentially a tunnel passing through your roof, linking the indoors to the outdoors.

While you can seal off that tunnel, the area around it is still vulnerable.

Think of it like a juice box. When you poke a straw through the top of a juice box, the straw doesn’t perfectly fill up the hole that it made; there’s a little bit of space between the straw and the top of the box.

The same is true of a chimney–there’s going to be a little bit of space between the chimney and the rest of the roof because they aren’t one contiguous structure.

With that in mind, here’s what to know about chimney flashing.

Chimney flashing is material that fills up the space between chimney and roof, forming a watertight seal around your chimney. There are three layers: step flashing, counter flashing, and base flashing.

Each layer covers a different part of your roof and chimney, with base flashing acting as an overall waterproofing agent.

Why You Need Chimney Flashing Repair

Damaged chimney flashing can lead to several problems, both to your roof and the interior of your home. The most common issue that results from damaged flashing is water damage.

Water damage can take a few different forms. You might notice water running down the side of your chimney, or you may have a more serious roof leak.

One of the more serious consequences of water infiltration is fireplace mold. Mold in your home can make people sick and cause respiratory issues; fireplace mold is particularly difficult because it can be hard to see and clean.

If you spot mold in or near your fireplace, that’s a sign that you need to schedule some chimney repair.

Water can also damage drywall, and enough damage over time can cause structural issues to your home. You can avoid this by keeping up to date on your chimney maintenance.

Keep Your Chimney in Working Order

Your chimney can be one of the most vulnerable parts of your roof, especially if you have damaged chimney flashing. Regular chimney flashing repair and maintenance should protect you from problems, so don’t neglect it!

As any homeowner can attest, chimney repair is only one item in a long list of important maintenance work that a house requires. Visit our home improvement blog to learn more tips for house repair!
