The entire EPF (Employee Provident Fund) services are operated online. Users need to log in to the UAN E-Sewa Online Portal using their UAN as the UAN login ID and respective passwords. In addition, the UAN official website enables users to check EPF balances, withdraw from their EPF accounts, and avail of loans against their EPF online.
Thus, you notice that the UAN is crucial for accessing the UAN E-Sewa Online Portal. So, let us understand how to generate the UAN in the simplest manner possible.
What is UAN?
Before generating the UAN, let us understand what UAN is. The EPFO (Employees Provident Fund Organization) allots a unique 12-digit universal number known as UAN to each employee contributing to their PF accounts. The best aspect of UAN is that it remains the same for an employee throughout their career, even if they switch jobs.
Every time a user switches jobs, the EPFO allots a new member ID linked to the UAN. Here is how you generate your UAN.
Generate your UAN in Three Simple Steps
Generating your UAN is easy. Here are three easy ways to do it.
· Through the Employer
Generally, your employer generates your UAN. Therefore, the employee can obtain the UAN directly from the employer. Your payslip contains the UAN printed on it. The employer generates the UAN using the following steps.
a. The employer logs into the EPF Employer Portal with the help of the Establishment ID and password.
b. Proceed to the “Register Individual” tab available in the ‘Member’ section.
c. Enter all details like Aadhar card, PAN card, bank details, etc.
d. Proceed to approve all the details in the ‘Approval’ section
e. The EPFO generates a new UAN allowing the employer to link it with the PF account.
· Directly through the website
It is also possible for employees to generate the UAN, even if the employer has not shared it on the payslip. However, you need the following documents on hand to create the UAN.
a. Identity Proof Documents – Any one of driving license, Aadhar card, passport, PAN card, voter’s ID, etc
b. Address Proof Documents – Any one amongst ration card, passport, Aadhar card, rental agreement, utility bill latest copy, driving license, etc.
c. Bank Account Details – A/c number and IFSC
d. Other documents include ESIC (Employee State Insurance Corporation) card
The process of generating UAN is entirely online.
a. Access the UAN member portal and click on the “Aadhar Card verified UAN allotment” link present at the bottom right corner of the page.
b. Enter the Aadhar Card number and wait for the OTP to be generated. You will receive the OTP on your registered mobile number.
c. Enter the OTP and wait for the portal to fetch the details from the Aadhar Card database to auto-populate the respective fields.
d. Click on the option ‘Obtain UAN’ to get your UAN delivered through SMS.
· An alternate way to generate UAN
Here is a simple alternative way of generating your UAN.
a. Access the UAN member portal and click on the ‘Know your UAN’ option.
b. Select your state and the respective EPFO office using the dropdown box details.
c. Enter your PF number or the member ID and other details like name, DOB, and mobile number. Then, complete the captcha verification to get the Authorization Pin.
d. Enter the PIN and click on the option, ‘Validate OTP and get UAN.’
e. You get the UAN delivered to your mobile as an SMS message.
You can use the UAN as your UAN login to access the UAN E-Sewa Portal and avail of its services. However, it is essential to complete the UAN activation process before using the E-Sewa portal.
UAN Activation
Once you generate the UAN, it must be validated before using it as your UAN login on the E-Sewa portal. The UAN activation process is easy.
a. Visit the UAN E-Sewa member portal and look towards the bottom right-hand side to get the ‘Activate UAN’ option. Click on it to proceed further.

Final Words
The UAN is crucial for every employee contributing to their PF accounts. Since the entire process has become online, employees don’t need to close and transfer their existing balances when they take up new jobs. In addition, the universal account number allows them to merge multiple PF accounts and balances. The UAN is also useful for monitoring the PF balances, withdrawing PF partially/entirely, availing loans against PF, etc.
