VTI Students Earn Gold Medals at SkillsUSA Virginia State Championships
SkillsUSA conducted its annual state championships at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, on April 8 and 9. Hundreds of high school students and post-secondary students competed against each other to display their skills like cosmetology, culinary arts, mechanical fields, trades, and leadership competitions.
The SkillsUSA mission statement is for “members to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible American citizens. We improve the quality of our nation’s future skilled workforce through the development of SkillsUSA Framework skills that include personal, workplace, and technical skills grounded in academics.”
The Virginia Technical Institute supplied 13 students to participate in Residential Electrical Wiring, Industrial Motor Control, Plumbing, Welding Fabrication (3 man team), Teamwork (2 man team), Job Skill Demonstrations, Commercial and Residential Appliance and Refrigeration, and Carpentry. Between these 13 contestants, they won nine gold medals and one bronze medal.
The gold medalists will move on to national competitions in Atlanta, GA on June 20-24th. These events usually have Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs, other fortune 500 company CEOs, politicians, and skilled tradesmen.
Travis Wood, a welding teacher at VTI as well as the welding instructor at Pittsylvania County Career and Technical Center, had his high school welding fabrication team win gold in the high school category.

The SkillsUSA National Competition further hopes to see 20,000 participants at the Georgia World Congress Center. The executive director of VTI hopes to view the students competing on a national grade and return the gold to AltaVista.
