The golden hue you get from the sun. The soft dewy glow your favorite makeup products give you. When you want to look like you just walked in from a day at the beach all summer long, you need to know how to properly care for your skin. Use these tips and tricks to stay glowing all season.

Choose the Right Products

The sand and sun can take a lot out of your skin, especially if you’re someone who likes to be outside all summer. Choosing the right skincare products is essential for ensuring you stay hydrated, soft, and silky smooth even after hours out in the elements. Even if you don’t like to use a lot of products, a good moisturizer is essential. Moisturizer is important because it helps to create a barrier on your skin that prevents you from losing water, which creates a fuller and dewier complexion. without the right moisturizing product, you’ll have dry skin that often looks duller.

Drink Plenty of Water

Using a moisturizer is important but it’s not even the most important way to keep your body’s thirst quenched. Drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day is important for keeping your body well-hydrated for those long days in the sun. In addition to keeping your skin from becoming tight or flaky, it may help to protect you from wrinkles down the line. For many people, drinking enough water helps with overall health as well.

Use Sunscreen Every Day

Even if you don’t plan to spend a lot of time in the sun, it’s a good idea to wear sunscreen every day. Even a few minutes of exposure to the sun’s UV rays can have your skin start to feel tight and dry. It may lead to dark spots as well. Buy a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 (although the higher, the better) and apply it in the morning before putting on your makeup. It’s often a good idea to reapply at least once during the day as well. Remember, though, it’s not just your face that needs sunscreen. Slather it on your shoulders, arms, chest, legs, and anywhere that will be exposed to the sun, even if only for a few minutes.

Cut Back on Exfoliation

While gentle exfoliation is important for your skincare routine, there can be too much of a good thing. Gentle exfoliation is important for removing dead skin cells that can lead to dry skin or create the appearance of blemishes and age spots. Exfoliation also makes it easier for your skin to absorb serums and moisturizers. However, if you exfoliate too often, you’ll expose your healthy skin to too many environmental impacts too quickly. Exfoliation 2-3 times a week is plenty for most people.

Skip the Heavy Makeup

Unless it’s a special occasion, it’s a good idea to skip the heavy makeup during the summer months. When you’re sweating or spending time in the sun, the skin needs to be able to breathe. Makeup causes it to trap sweat which can then lead to blemishes or an overly oily complexion. If you need to wear makeup daily, aim for tinted moisturizers or foundations with light coverage. Moisturizing lip balm or glossy lipsticks to avoid drying out your lips as well.

Wash Your Face 

No matter how tired you are, make sure that you wash your face before you go to bed every night. Doing so removes sweat, oil, and dirt buildup that can lead to blemishes literally overnight. After using your cleanser, be sure to rinse thoroughly, being gentle to avoid turning your skin red. Wash your face in the morning as well and then do your best to avoid touching your face throughout the day.
