Importance of Education in the Light of Islam: An Overview

It is a sacred duty for all Muslims, male and female, to pursue knowledge. “Iqra” was the Quran’s first revealed word. The word means to read! Islam teaches us to educate ourselves! It is very important in Islam to learn something new every day.

Many English-medium madrasas in Dhaka have recently begun to offer high-quality Islamic instruction. It’s past time for the Muslim Ummah to reorganize its educational priority following Islamic principles while also meeting current requirements. Future generations will become torchbearers of Islamic ideals as a result of such an educational program. They will play an essential role in today’s world.

Surah Al-Zumr, ayah 9 teaches us: “Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know?” and Surah Al-Baqarah, ayah 269 tells us: “Allah grants wisdom to whom He pleases and to whom wisdom is granted indeed he receives an overflowing benefit.”

What Does Education Mean in Islam?

The process of assisting individuals in acquiring new knowledge and skills in order to become valuable members of society is referred to as education. In other words, it is a method of assisting people in developing new abilities, values, habits, and beliefs.

Education in Islam is a method of assisting people in living their lives following Islamic teachings. According to Islam, intellectual, physical, and emotional development are all futile without a firm belief in Islamic fundamentals.

To put it another way, Islam places a premium on establishing a formal educational system that allows people to strike a balance between Deen and Dunya.

The Importance of Education in Islam

Did you know that the first revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) began with the word “Read”? It demonstrates the importance of education in Islam.

There are several chapters in hadiths about Ilm, which implies knowledge. As a result, Muslim scholars believe that education is the source of all knowledge. It is also how one can deepen their faith and Imaan.

Thus, it assists you in gaining the necessary knowledge. To put it another way, Ilm (knowledge) is a concept of understanding (‘al-ma ani al-ma luma).

The first revelation of education is quoted as follows:

“Read. Read in the name of your Lord who created; [He] created the human being from a blood clot. Read in the name of thy Lord who taught by the pen: [He] taught the human being what he did not know” (Quran, 96: 1-5).

Here are some additional verses from the Holy Quran that encourage knowledge acquisition:

  • “Are those who have knowledge equal to those who do not have knowledge?!”(Quran, 39:9)
  • “Seeking the knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim man and woman.”
  • “Allah raises to higher ranks the believers and those of knowledge.” ( Ayah 11, Surah Al-Mujadalah).

A Real-Life Example of Promoting Education in Islam

During his lifetime, the Prophet (PBUH) set an example for Muslims throughout history to follow. After crushing the invading army of non-Muslims of Macca in the battle of Badar, for example, the Muslims arrested 70 non-Muslims.

In addition to fair treatment, the Prophet established a criterion for releasing prisoners of war, demonstrating the value of education in Islam. “Those among the captives who were literate could go free if they taught basic literacy skills to 10 Muslim children,” the Prophet (PBUH) said.

Conclusion

Knowledge is a road of guidance that aids in developing personal faith. As a result, every man and female has a right to education. As a result, education has always been significant in Islam.

It teaches you to respect everyone, which is the most crucial aspect. Our creator is Allah (S.W.T). He created the world, bestowed wisdom on us, and told us how to live our lives.

In Islam, we are taught to thank God first thing in the morning. You can use the education and knowledge acquisition process to learn and understand the teachings of the Quran and Hadith.
