Working of the Butterfly Valve: Things You Should Know!

The butterfly valves are among the most valuable valves installed in their service. This system covers all primary functions that are performed by a valve, and so you will get all the benefits that are otherwise offered by three different kinds of valves. It helps start, stop, and control the media flow. This article will talk to you about the butterfly valves and impart a deep understanding of the valves, how it works, and their different applications.

What Is Butterfly Valve and What Are Its Functions?

The butterfly valve is a part of the family of industrial valves that are quarter-turn operated. Different butterfly valve types are available in the market, and any particular type can be used based on its applications. They are different from the ball valves in several ways. The butterfly valve has a thin disc perpendicular to the flow of media. The user will have to either turn the handwheel or the lever to 90-degrees; the disc moves parallel to the media’s flow.

These valves are very popular since they get opened quickly, and this kind of valve is beneficial in controlling media besides having the capabilities of isolation. The highest grade of metal is used to manufacture the valve disc, and the seat is either made from soft elastomeric metal or any other metal.

The valve has a straightforward design, and its design is advantageous since it can easily fit in lightweight, tight, and cost-effective spaces. Furthermore, the valve is an ideal choice for applications that require liquids of high volume but lower in pressure and glasses. Using drive-on boat docks is highly recommended in water to stay safe.

Working on the Butterfly Valve

The butterfly valve is one of those few industrial valves that efficiently isolates and regulates media flow. Just like the other quarter-turn valves, you can open butterfly valves easily. It can either be operated electronically, manually, or pneumatically as well.

Butterfly Valve

A handle present on it is turned a quarter-turn to open the valve. The disc present inside the valve body changes its position, and initially, it is in perpendicular shape to the flow of media, and then it becomes parallel. The disc gets shifted away from its seat and moves towards the centerline of the valve.

If it gets opened in a full quarter turn, the medium will flow in full force. However, when the valve push opens, there is a slight drop in the pressure. If you want to close the valve, you will have to make the quarter-turn opposite. That said, the disc moves to its original perpendicular position from the parallel position and ensures even sealing. The valve gets fully closed in this position.

It is recommended that the valve be installed in an open position. If you choose to install it in a closed position, there are chances that the seal gets wedged against the disc, making it difficult for the valve to open. You should wear a quality jacket like that of Fangyuan jackets while operating to stay safe.

Types Of Butterfly Valves Based on Its End Connections

Based on how the valve is connected to the pipe, there are different classifications of the valve.

  • Wafer Style: This type of valve is attached in between the two flanges with the help of bolts that are used to lock the entire body.
  • Lug Style: The lugs are located outside the body for this type of valve. Bolts are used to connect the valve to the pipe system. With the low-pressure ratings usually, it is attached to the dead-end services.

Types of Butterfly Valves Based on the Disc Configuration

  • Eccentric: The stem of this type of valve doesn’t pass through the valve’s centreline. Instead, it is being placed just behind the face of the disc that is usually at the opposite of the flow direction.
  • Concentric: It is one of the most basic kinds of butterfly valves. It is also known as the zero offset butterfly valve, where the steam passes through the disc’s centreline and the pipe’s center. The sealing of this butterfly valve depends on the seat, i.e., how effectively closed it is. This kind of application is best suited for applications of low-pressure.

Butterfly valves have applications in several industries that include chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries. You can also use this type of valve in wastewater treatment facilities, fuel handling, and fire protection services.

The working mechanism of butterfly valves is quite simple. Also, its mechanism is highly beneficial for the applications and services. To understand the working of this valve in-depth, you need to know each part of the valve and its functions to know in what work each component is involved.
