Your Guide to the Different Types of Wool Fabric

There are many different types of wool fabric, each with its own unique properties. If you’re not sure which type of wool is right for your next needs, don’t worry! We’re here to help. In this article, we’ll discuss the most popular types of wool fabric and what makes them unique.

What exactly is wool?

Wool is a natural fibre that comes from sheep and other animals. It’s one of the oldest textile fibres in existence and it’s still very popular today. Wool fabric is prized for its warmth, durability and versatility—which is why wool blanket is so popular. Apart from that, it’s also used to make other garments like sweaters, coats and carpets.

On that note, let’s move on to the different types of wool:

1. Angora Wool

Angora wool comes from the Angora rabbit. This type of wool is very fine and soft, making it ideal for delicate projects. It’s also quite warm, so it’s often used in winter garments. However, angora wool can be difficult to work with because it’s so slippery.

2. Alpaca Wool

If you’re looking for a soft, warm fabric that’s still easy to work with, consider alpaca wool. Alpaca wool is similar to angora wool in many ways, but it’s not as slippery and easier to control. You only need to find the right fabric store where you can buy quality alpaca wool.

3.  Cashmere

Cashmere is one of the most luxurious types of wool. It’s made from the cashmere goat and it’s popular for its softness and warmth. Cashmere is often used in high-end garments like sweaters and coats. However, it can be quite expensive.

4.  Lambswool

Lambswool is one of the most common types of wool. It’s made from, you guessed it, lambs! Lambswool is soft and warm, making it ideal for a variety of garments. It’s also relatively easy to work with, so it’s a good choice for beginners.

5.  Mohair Wool

Mohair wool comes from the hair of the Angora goat. This type of wool is very strong and durable, making it ideal for heavy-duty garments. However, it can be quite difficult to work with because of its slippery texture.

6. Merino Wool

Merino wool is one of the most popular types of wool. Coming from the Merino sheep, it’s known for its softness, warmth and versatility. It’s great for a wide variety of garments, including coats, sweaters, blankets and carpets.

7. Camel Hair

Camel hair is made from the hair of, you guessed it again, camels! This type of wool is very strong and durable, so it’s also good for heavy-duty garments. Camel hair is another type of wool that can be quite difficult to work with because it’s slippery.

8. Melton Wool

Melton wool is a heavy-duty fabric that’s often used in outerwear. It’s made from a variety of different fibres, including wool, cotton and synthetic materials. Melton wool is very durable and warm, making it ideal for winter garments.

9. Shetland Wool

Shetland wool is a type of wool that comes from the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland. While it’s durable, it can be slippery so keep this in mind when shopping for wool.

Now that you know a little bit more about the different types of wool, you can start shopping for the perfect fabric for your needs!
