These masks can not only trap viruses but also destroy them.
It was just like every other pitch I receive: “Our client’s product that I think would interest you in.” This wasn’t an email about a new television or a bottle of tequila, or even deodorant spray for your feet (yes, it’s a thing). It was actually a company selling N95 respirator masks to the general public. These are the same masks that hospitals reported a shortage of as doctors and frontline workers continue treating patients affected by the COVID-19 epidemic.
Although the FDA has approved these masks for personal protective equipment (PPE), it has recommended that N95 masks only be used by healthcare professionals, in line with the most recent CDC guidelines. For everyone else, the CDC recommends cloth face covers.
How is it possible for an independent preventative company to make N95 masks accessible to the public? It all comes down to supply and demand.
N95 Masks (10-Pack), $89.99, available at N95 Mask Co.
N95 Mask Co. claims its Respokare NIOSH N95 Respirator Masks block up to 95% small particles (measured at less than.3 micron). The masks are said to “inactivate upto 99.9% of particles in minutes” and neutralize germs and viruses on their surface, preventing potentially harmful exposure to your lungs and airstream. These masks are among the best online protective masks, claiming they not only trap viruses but also destroy them.
Regular face masks provide a physical barrier to fluids and dust, but they do not filter particles or stop the spread of pathogens like viruses. They are not approved for use in medical settings and aren’t considered PPE.
According to the FDA, respirators offer greater protection against bacteria and viruses by filtering out particles from the air while being more snugly fitted against the face. N95 Mask Co sells these types of masks.
Mia Sultan, CMO, stated that the company’s goal has been to supply masks to hospitals and the general public. She says that the two supply chains are not mutually exclusive.
Rolling Stone was informed by her in an email that N95 Mask Co. “has and continues to prioritize frontline employees and institutions.” We are able maintain a consistent level at the factory level and even out the fluctuations inherent in the institutional ordering process by making our products accessible to consumers. If inventory is needed to quickly reallocate to institutional customers, it may happen that consumer orders are delayed in rare cases.
Although supply chain management is complex, it’s simple to see that the more products a company has at its factories, then the better prepared it will be when hospitals or other government institutions call. N95 Mask Co. rep says: “[The company] must make a firm commitment to the factory as well as UPS regarding exactly how many units will need to be manufactured and shipped each day.”
This means that even though an order may not arrive from a hospital it must still leave the factory and board a UPS plane. The company will lose its scheduled time at the factory and the next day’s space on the plane if it does not. The rep explained that this is where consumer orders are received to fill in the gaps and keep the supply chain moving.
NIOSH-certified and CDC-approved, the N95 Mask Co. mask appears on FDA’s approved manufacturers list. Each mask is made up of four layers of fabric. The outer layer is water-resistant and the middle layer has anti-viral technology.
N95 Masks (Four-Pack), $49.99, available at N95 Mask Co.
There are a variety of products available. A four-pack of masks starts at $49.99 and a 20-pack goes for $179.99. A bulk pack of 200 masks is also available for $1,499 (or $7.50 per mask). These masks are recommended for single-use only by officials.
Honest PPE Supply also offers N95 masks (all shipped from the U.S.), if you are looking for alternatives.
N95 Masks (20-Pack), $159.80 available at Honest PPE Supply
Shaz Amin, founder of Honest PPE, stated that his goal was to sell NIOSH N95 Masks at the “lowest price” because he believes that saving lives is more important than a large profit margin. The Makrite N95 masks have five layers of material and a foldable cup shape. They also come with thick, adjustable straps. Honest PPE also offers FDA-approved N95 respirator helmets starting at $4.95 each.
Amin claims that Honest PPE donated over 100,000 pieces of PPE equipment for recipients in need throughout the country.
N95 Mask Co. has donated over 5000 masks to Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, and to the JCC, and other organizations in New York and Louisville, Kentucky. They will be selling masks at a reduced price to military personnel, first responders, and medical facilities.
The rep explained that many hospitals no longer accept donations for quality control and liability protection. However, direct-to-consumer sales allow the client to fill the needs of front-line workers and institutions more consistently and quickly when needed.
