Studio vs. Traditional Apartments: Which One Saves You the Most Money?

Apartments are an essential part of any city and are a cornerstone of the housing market and the world of renters. In fact, for those who want to live in an urban area, renting an apartment is often the only affordable option. However, there are two primary types of apartments that renters can choose from traditional and studio or micro units.

When choosing between renting a studio or a traditional apartment, there are several factors that you should consider first. Both types of apartments have pros and cons, so while one will suit your needs better than the other, it’s up to you to decide which one is right for you.

Here’s everything you need to know about these two different types of housing if you’re working on a budget:

What Is a Studio Apartment?

A studio apartment is a single room with no separate kitchen or bathroom. These types of

Apartments are most common in densely populated cities where space is at a premium.

Apartment studios are an affordable option for renters who don’t mind sacrificing a bit of space and privacy in exchange for cheaper monthly rent.

So, when looking for studio apartments for rent, you should know that you’re going to have your kitchen, bedroom, and living room in one space.

What Is a Traditional Apartment?

A traditional apartment is designed with separate rooms for the kitchen, living area, and bathroom. Traditional apartment units are the standard among most renters. Traditional apartments offer many advantages over studio units.

For one thing, they have a built-in separation between public and private areas. The kitchen and living room are generally considered “public” areas, while the bathroom and bedrooms are private. This offers a level of privacy and soundproofing not available in studio units.

Which One Saves You More Money?

Although traditional apartments are more spacious and offer more privacy, studio apartments are actually cheaper on average. The reason for this is two-fold.

For one thing, studios don’t require a separate kitchen. This saves the landlord money on building design and utility bills. The second reason is that studios have fewer total square feet. This means lower construction and utility costs per square foot.

You’ll find that the average rental price for a studio apartment is $1,085, while the average rental price for a traditional one is $1,331. This is large because studios cost less to build.

Although traditional apartments are more spacious and offer more privacy, the savings on construction and utility bills associated with studio units outweigh this advantage.

The Bottom Line

If you’re a single person or a couple and don’t mind living in close quarters, you might be better off looking for studio apartments for rent. You can save some money on rent and utilities compared to a traditional apartment.

On the other hand, if you’re a family of four or more, you’re probably better off with a traditional apartment. It gives you more space, better soundproofing, and a lower bill on average.

Nonetheless, no matter what type of apartment you rent, you must be careful when signing the lease. Make sure the building is well-maintained and that your neighbors are good people. You don’t want to be stuck in an apartment that is infested with pests or has people who are constantly raising the decibel levels.
