What? I can’t hear you – you want to know how to soundproof your home

The first question to ask is exactly why they need to soundproof a room or an entire house. There are a number of good reasons, so I can think of a few answers – you might want a dedicated recording studio, a quiet room for babies or the elderly to sleep in and not be disturbed, or simply to keep outside noise to a minimum. There really isn’t a single answer to the question; It’s really up to your own imagination and desires. Sound Insulation

In years past, it wasn’t practical or affordable to do the soundproofing Melamine Foam for your home yourself, but now it’s easier to muffle or eliminate the noise with do -it -yourself kits being offered by soundproofing foam manufacturers . There is a variety of products on the market now including corrugated and non-convoluted foam, clad acoustic foam, polyimide foam, 100% fire retardant melamine foam and closed cell acoustic foam.

Good time to list the room

Now is a good time to list the room or rooms you want to soundproof in order to work out your budget. You should also keep the following important considerations in mind:

Remember that windows are the path of least resistance for noise entering or leaving your home. In terms of windows, the most porous are single pane windows and wooden window frames. Just using double glazing can quickly reduce noise by up to 20%.

Lack of insulation

If your house is older like mine, your attic may be lacking insulation. Adding insulation not only helps reduce your energy bills; It can also help in your efforts to soundproof your home. If you have an asphalt roof, adding extra layers of roofing material is an additional way to dampen or eliminate noise, especially when aircraft or excessive street noise is pervasive.

Sound traveling in your home

To prevent noise from being transmitted within your home, your hallways should be built so that the doors never face each other. Because air allows sound to be transmitted, drafts between rooms carry sound through open doors.

With the rise in popularity of home theaters, DIY soundproofing kits have become increasingly popular. For just a few hundred dollars, families can purchase all the material needed to completely soundproof their room, with direct results in brighter, better sound. With 4″ x 8″ foam panels, you can quickly attach the panels to your existing walls using Velcro points that can be easily removed without damage.

Some other helpful tips for soundproofing your home include:

Every room in your home should be made up of at least 25% absorbent materials such as carpets, furniture or curtains. Following this minimum will reduce noise made by footsteps, televisions, instruments, stereos, pets and other noise producers.

To further deaden the noise in your home, you can add a second layer of drywall. For spaces that race streets, double drywall greatly reduces the noise that seeps into most homes.

Rooms above living areas should have some form of padding or carpeting for soundproofing.

The most important thing to remember when soundproofing your home is that you can’t overdo it! Do your homework, write down your plan and get started. Just go and do it yourself!

DIY Guide – Painting Melamine Cabinet Doors and Drawers

Changing the tone and color of your kitchen has Melamine Foamnever been easier by following the melamine cabinet painting mini-course offered by Home-Improvement-and-Financing.com. Melamine paint is a urethane-reinforced, oil-based paint that can typically be applied to a variety of surfaces including laminates, plastic, fiberglass, glass and even ceramic. This article will answer your questions about painting non-wood cabinets, which primer and paint to use, and the steps involved.

Pre-cleaned surface without primer

Some paint experts believe paint can be applied directly to a pre-cleaned surface without a primer, others believe kitchen cabinets should be cleaned with detergent, sanded lightly to give paint a grip and trisodium phosphate (TSP) cleaner, and then allowed to dry before painting . One supplier even goes so far as to say that applying a coat of a multi-surface primer before applying the one coat goes a long way in improving the performance of the melamine paint.

Step-by-step instructions for painting melamine doors and drawers

  • Protect your floors by laying out plastic sheeting.
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands.
  • Ventilation is the priority. Open the windows to facilitate drying.
  • Remove the cabinet doors to a place where you can paint them horizontally and let them dry.
  • Remove the knobs and handles and keep them in a safe place – unless you’re going to buy new ones.
  • Clean and degrease surfaces and allow to dry thoroughly.
  • Follow the instructions to mix TSP with water and wash the surface. Leave to dry for a few hours.
  • Remove dust and dirt in the corners and sand the surface thoroughly. Apply the primer with an 80-100 grit sandpaper.
  • Apply a primer and let the cabinets dry. This should be a good quality product that offers good adhesion for the top coat. Drying should take about four hours. This is an important part of the process. Make sure nobody is in the house where you are working.
  • Lightly sand the surface of the primer with 240 grit sandpaper or finer.
  • Take a natural bristle brush and apply the melamine color in gentle up and down strokes to achieve an even glossy finish. (Some vendors recommend using a foam brush or high-density foam roller).
  • Best results are achieved by painting three thin coats instead of one or two thick coats, allowing adequate drying time between coats.
  • If you paint over a dark color, apply two coats anyway. Allow at least sixteen hours to dry before applying the second coat.
  • Allow sixteen hours or more to dry before re-hanging the kitchen cabinet doors. Note that full drying is required for best results and is worth it. Also keep in mind that most melamine paints can be touch dry in a few hours but will not be fully cured for a few days. So let them dry longer before remounting the doors and wait until they are fully cured.
